Singer Winehouse’s husband admits to assault

June 9th, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

Amy WinehouseLONDON, England (AP) — The husband of singer Amy Winehouse has admitted assaulting a barman and attempting to cover it up.

Blake Fielder-Civil, 26, was being tried in London on charges of attacking pub landlord James King, and then conspiring with King to have the landlord withdraw as a witness. Fielder-Civil and three-co-defendants pleaded guilty last week, but a court order barred reporting the pleas because King is scheduled to face a separate trial. Judge David Radford lifted the reporting restriction Monday.

Soul diva Winehouse and Fielder-Civil married in Miami in May 2007. He was arrested in November and has been in jail awaiting trial ever since. Winehouse has become an international star since she released the Grammy-winning album “Back to Black” in 2006. But her music has been overshadowed by reports of her drug use, run-ins with the law and tempestuous relationship with Fielder-Civil.

In the latest tabloid storm, Winehouse defended herself against allegations of racism after a newspaper published footage of her singing a racist ditty. The video — filmed by Fielder-Civil sometime before his arrest and published Sunday by the News of the World — allegedly shows Winehouse and another woman singing a string of racial epithets to the tune of a children’s song.

Winehouse later told paparazzi outside her north London home that she was sorry, adding: “I don’t want to play anything down, but I’m the least racist person going.” Winehouse’s spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press. Winehouse was at London’s Snaresbrook Crown Court last week for the opening arguments in her husband’s trial.

Fielder-Civil faces a maximum of five years in prison for the assault charge. Perverting the course of justice carries a maximum sentence of life, though that is unlikely to be imposed in this case.

The defendants are due to be sentenced later.

Winehouse gives first concert after rehab

June 1st, 2008 @ 10:47 am

WinehouseLISBON, Portugal (AP) — Amy Winehouse showed up late for her first concert since leaving rehab, giving an underwhelming performance in front of 90,000 people Friday at a Lisbon music festival The Grammy-winning jazz-pop diva turned up almost an hour late for the outdoor show. She apologized for having a sore throat, and her voice cracked during the 55-minute set.

Winehouse, wearing a short dress, appeared distracted during her performance. She paused to talk to members of her band, fiddled at length with her microphone, sucked throat candy and at one point dashed offstage but quickly returned. She had cuts on her left arm, and her right hand was bandaged.

Winehouse’s musical career has flourished despite her erratic behavior, missed concerts and stints in drug rehab. “Hey Lisbon,” Winehouse told the crowd, which had booed when she failed to show up on time. “I’m sorry I’m late,” she said The singer is booked to play at a series of music festivals in Europe this summer. She said she is set to perform next month at a concert in London honoring Nelson Mandela.

Dueling reports about Jolie birth

May 30th, 2008 @ 10:11 am

JOLIELOS ANGELES, California (AP) — “Entertainment Tonight” is reporting that Angelina Jolie has given birth to twins in France — but People magazine says that’s not true.

Angelina Jolie responds to questions at the “Kung Fu Panda” after-party while at Cannes earlier in May. The television show reported the news on its Web site, citing a source close to Jolie that it did not name.

However, a Jolie representive told People that the actress has not given birth. “Angelina has not given birth. She is fine, enjoying her home and her family in France,” the representative told People, according to the magazine’s Web site.

The twins would be the fifth and sixth children for the couple known as Brangelina. Their other children are 6-year-old Maddox, 4-year-old Pax, 3-year-old Zahara and 2-year-old Shiloh.

The pair recently moved into the Miraval Estate villa in the French hamlet of Correns, in the Provence region, according to the mayor and the inn’s owner. “They are people who I hope will live normally here,” Mayor Michael Latz told The Associated Press.

Security guards were blocking the gates to the estate Friday, while a postal truck and other maintenance vehicles regularly passed in and out. Onno Stijl, owner of the L’Auberge du Parc inn, said it was a good thing they were moving in and could help business. He said he gets his wine from the estate’s vineyards. “It’s a couple living here now like everyone,” he said by telephone. The area, he said, “is a bit isolated but that gives it a certain … privacy.”

According to its Web site, the Miraval estate dates from pre-Roman times. It includes fountains, aqueducts, moats, a lake and vineyards that produce an organic wine distributed worldwide. Pitt and Jolie may be Miraval’s first movie stars in residence, but Miraval has seen its share of rock stars. The estate includes a studio which has hosted the likes of Sting, the Cranberries and Pink Floyd, who recorded tracks for “The Wall” album there

Aerosmith’s Tyler in rehab to recover from foot injuries

May 30th, 2008 @ 9:57 am

TylerLOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Steven Tyler checked into a rehab facility in search of a “safe environment” to recover from several foot surgeries and physical therapy, the Aerosmith frontman said in a statement Thursday.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler says he needed a “safe environment” to recover from his foot surgeries.

Tyler said the surgeries were to correct long-time foot injuries resulting from his physical performances as the singer for the blues-rock band.

“The doctors told me the pain in my feet could be corrected but it would require a few surgeries over time,” Tyler said in the statement. “The ‘foot repair’ pain was intense, greater than I’d anticipated. The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy were traumatic. I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet.”

The 60-year-old was known for heavy drug and alcohol abuse in the 1970s and early 1980s, but completed rehabilitation in 1986, after which Aerosmith enjoyed a successful revival.

Stone reaps bad karma for quake comments

May 29th, 2008 @ 11:49 am

BEIJING, China (CNN) — French fashion house Christian Dior says it is dropping prominent actress Sharon Stone from its advertisements in China after her remarks about the recent devastating earthquake being an act of “karma.”

Actress Sharon Stone suggested last week that the May 12 earthquake could have been the result of bad karma. Stone, who made the remarks last week at the Cannes Film Festival, was referring to the May 12 earthquake that has caused more than 68,000 fatalities.

“They’re not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a friend of mine. And then all of this earthquake and all this happened and I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice, that bad things happen to you?” Stone said on camera. The statement drew fire from citizens and government officials.

“We have also noticed that Shar—what’s her name? Sharon Stone . …. She should do more to promote understanding and friendship between nations,” said Qin Gang, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry.

The uproar swept across the Internet.

Bill Murray’s wife wants divorce

May 29th, 2008 @ 11:32 am

Big-Hired Assassin and Billy MurrayCHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) — The wife of entertainer Bill Murray has filed for divorce after nearly 11 years of marriage, alleging he abused her and is addicted to marijuana and alcohol. Bill Murray and wife Jennifer have been married for almost 11 years.

Jennifer Butler Murray filed divorce papers May 12 in Charleston County. She owns a home in South Carolina, where she lives with the couple’s four children.

The complaint was first reported by The Post and Courier of Charleston. It also alleges frequent abandonment by the former “Saturday Night Live” star.

Bill Murray’s attorney, John McDougall, wouldn’t comment on the allegations, but said the entertainer “is deeply saddened by the breakup of his marriage. He and his wife made loving parents and they are committed to the best interests of their children,” McDougall said.

Jennifer Murray’s attorney, Robert Rosen, said he had no comment.

The couple signed a prenuptial agreement, which was filed as an exhibit with the divorce papers, before they married in 1997. As part of the agreement, both waived their right to alimony or support if the marriage broke up. However, Murray agreed to pay $7 million to his ex-wife within 60 days of a final divorce decree.

The complaint, which doesn’t specify instances of Murray’s alleged marijuana or alcohol use, alleges he would often leave without telling his wife and says he “travels overseas where he engages in public and private altercations and sexual liaisons.” It also alleges Murray physically abused his wife and last November “hit her in the face and then told her she was ‘lucky he didn’t kill her.’

Murray, the star of movies such as “Ghostbusters,” “Caddyshack” and “Groundhog Day,” is a co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team. The 57-year-old actor earned an Oscar nomination for his role in “Lost in Translation.”
