BEIJING, China (CNN) — French fashion house Christian Dior says it is dropping prominent actress Sharon Stone from its advertisements in China after her remarks about the recent devastating earthquake being an act of “karma.”
Actress Sharon Stone suggested last week that the May 12 earthquake could have been the result of bad karma. Stone, who made the remarks last week at the Cannes Film Festival, was referring to the May 12 earthquake that has caused more than 68,000 fatalities.
“They’re not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a friend of mine. And then all of this earthquake and all this happened and I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice, that bad things happen to you?” Stone said on camera. The statement drew fire from citizens and government officials.
“We have also noticed that Shar—what’s her name? Sharon Stone . …. She should do more to promote understanding and friendship between nations,” said Qin Gang, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry.
